About
On the 1st June 1939, the newly built submarine HMS Thetis sailed out of the River Mersey to commence sea trials in Liverpool Bay. Out of the 103 men aboard the Thetis that day only 4 survived, in what is still the worst peacetime disaster the Royal Navy has ever endured.

Playwright Fred Lawless's moving radio play was broadcast in September 1997 on BBC Radio 4, then repeated shortly after on BBC Radio Merseyside and the BBC World Service. As well as telling the story of this terrible disaster, the script is an excellent example of how to write a radio play that completely grips the listener.
