Gezien de dominante positie van het gewest in de Republiek en van de daarop volgende provincies Zuid- en Noord-Holland is de scheiding tussen regionaal en nationaal perspectief niet altijd scherp te maken. Deze bundel bevat de bijdragen van een symposium over de betekenis en identiteit van de Hollandse geschiedenis. Ook wordt een nieuw integraal overzicht van alle bovenlokale bestuursarchieven van (Noord- en Zuid- )Holland in zowel het Nationaal Archief als het Noord-Hollands Archief gepresenteerd: een nieuw apparaat voor de geschiedenis van Holland.
