About
Delavan sailed by the Panama route in 1849 and arrived in San Francisco on 1 April. He was involved in a mining company. He went to New York to promote mining stock. Delavan returned to California and worked in mining companies. His letters to the Adrian Expositor were first promotional and then descriptive of life in California.
