About
A new textbook reflecting the contemporary trend away from the statistical and test-description methods of presenting courses in measurement prevailing at the time of the appearance of the author's original text on measurement almost a decade ago, and marking a shift to approaches based upon the activities and problems of the educational program. There is little test description in the present volume. The emphasis is rather upon the diagnosis of teaching difficulties and the direction of learning at the different school levels, and the employment of measurement procedures in the solution of supervisory and administrative problems. Part I embodies a brief introductory survey of the history of measurement, the limitations of traditional procedures, and the outlook for the use of modern techniques in the improvement of learning. Part II, comprising chapters 2-13, is an extended treatment of the problems of diagnosis and appraisal of learning in all its aspects at the primary, elementary, secondary, and higher levels. Part III, presenting an appraisal of the educational program, is concerned with the statistical concepts involved in measurement and the implications of the measurement program in the general management and direction of educational activities. Each of the 18 chapters includes a set of questions and exercises and a selected bibliography, and the final chapter is made up of frequently asked questions, together with brief answers, about tests and measurements. The text is illustrated and indexed.
