Walter Scott, usually a discriminating antiquary, published ‘Auld Maitland’ in the third volume of his Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border (see also his ‘second edition’, 1803, cf. Bib# 4103475/Fr# 819 in this collection), a now-famous forgery perhaps by James Hogg. The present, revised edition includes, for the first time, three ballads forged by Robert Surtees; see J. A. Farrer, Literary forgeries. London and New York, 1907, pp. 258–60, and W. B. Todd & A. Bowden, Sir Walter Scott: A Bibliographical History, 1796–1832. New Castle, Del., 1998, 8Af.
