From the time we were children to our first date, and then right up to the moment we made our first big business deal, we have used the techniques of romance to make acquisitions in our life. As a child, it was a toy or treat we sought; later, it was for the attention of someone we found interesting or attractive. In business, the stakes are financial and are not as emotionally binding as they are in childhood or romantic pursuits.
As we get older, we not only perceive that the stakes increase, our clients become those who have no emotional ties to us, and therefore, we develop a fear of rejection. This fear is greater in some people and much less in others; but to some degree, everyone experiences a certain amount of anxiety in the process of developing this relationship. In business, the relationship can reach a high emotional level due to the financial stake involved. A financial relationship represents to us security, prominence and a feeling of self-worth.
As we grow older, the stakes change and the “customer” changes; that is where and when we begin to develop our fears with regard to “sales.” The key to successful sales is in realizing the natural ability to persuade our customers is already within us, and that we need to discard all of the learned fears that we have developed at other times in our lives.
You will come to realize you have already used the sales process presented in this book over and over throughout your life. This recognition will allow you to begin to apply it more effectively in your sales efforts and be confident of your own abilities.
