De Kim utopie' biedt aan de hand van circa 100 schilderijen uit een unieke Nederlandse privéverzameling een merkwaardige inkijk in het gesloten Noord-Korea. De schilderijen zijn in de periode van 1960 tot 2000 door professionele Noord-Koreaanse schilders in dienst van de staat gemaakt. De werken tonen een geïdealiseerd Noord-Korea, zoals de daar geldende kunsttheorie het dicteert. Ze vertellen het verhaal van een paradijselijk land dat zich onder het visionaire leiderschap van Kim Il Sung losgeworsteld heeft uit de onderdrukking en bouwt aan een utopische samenleving. Naast de Grote Leider en historische taferelen van militair verzet en heroïsch patriottisme, zijn industriële en wetenschappelijke vooruitgang en landbouwidylles terugkerende thema's. Het boek toont de verwevenheid van kunst en politiek en kunst als politiek medium, zoals we dat ook kennen van Sovjet-Rusland en maoïstisch China.
