Christian Wilhelm Ahlwardt (1760-1830), himself dabbled in literary forgery, notably of Pindar (see Bib# 8658691), paid Ossian the special compliment of retranslating into German the Gaelic and Latin versions of all the poems as published by Robert MacFarlan in 1807 (see Bib# 4103331/Fr# 626 in this collection). A projected fourth volume, which was to contain critical treatises including a thoroughly revised and enlarged translation of Sinclair's dissertation, and an exact translation in prose, which was to be published separately by Göschen, never appeared.
