Humphrey Jennings est principalement connu pour trois films : Listen to Britain, Fires Were Started et A Diary for Thimothy qu'il a réalisés pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, des commandes du ministère de l'Information. Mais ces films-là vont au-delà de la propagande. Ces courts-métrages lui ont valu le titre de "seul poète du cinéma britannique". Ainsi Jennings va-t-il exercer sur l'école réaliste anglaise une grande influence. Ses inspirations, il les trouve dans l'histoire, la littérature et la peinture. Il devient cofondateur du mouvement sociologique anglais Mass Observation.
