D'engagement en engagement, celui-ci passera du Soudan en 1894 (il rencontre Laperrine à Tombouctou), au Sud tunisien, puis au Sud algérien (après un raid vers In-Salah en 1898, il est incorporé à la Mission Foureau-Lamy) et enfin en Mauritanie (où il sera l'adjoint de Coppolani). Il s'éteint en France à 86 ans, en ayant toujours conservé ses amitiés sahariennes.
