The nondestructive characterization (NDC) of materials by electromagnetic techniques was born at least 50 years ago. A series of symposia was started in 1983, which was a considerable success. 225 scientists from 14 different countries took part in the last symposium held in Saarbrücken. The present proceedings volume represents the current level of knowledge in the field of NDC of materials. Die Idee von zerstörungsfreien Prüfverfahren von Material durch elektromagnetische Techniken ist vor mindestens 50 Jahren entstanden. Im Jahre 1983 begann eine Reihe von Symposien, die einen beachtlichen Erfolg nachweisen konnten. 225 Wissenschaftler aus 14 verschiedenen Ländern nahmen an dem 3. Symposium in Saarbrücken teil.
