"Within a period of six years, the Hamburg firm of von Gerkan, Marg and Partner - gmp, for short - has completed over one hundred designs for clients in China, five of which are already finished and twenty of which are currently under construction or in the planning stage. Preeminent is Lingang New City, a planned harbour city for 800,000 inhabitants close to Shanghai. Conceived by gmp in the tradition of ideal cities, the neighbourhoods were arranged in concentric rings around an artificial circular lake. Urban elements and spaces fulfil different communal functions - ranging from a city archive to theatres and churches to convention centres - while giving the plans an identity."--Jacket.
