A Franciscan preaching at Bruges, Cornelis Adriaenszoon Brouwer (1521–1581) had become famous for being a politically inspired proponent of Catholic orthodoxy, which made him a target of Calvinist pamphlets and caricatures. In 1569, his opponents published a work by ‘Christianus Neuter,’ the Impartial Christian, containing fake vernacular sermons by Brother Cornelis in which he attacked Protestants and Erasmian Catholics in the most violent and coarse terms. The book also describes how Brouwer founded a secret society of attractive women and girls of which he acted as the flagellating father confessor. The satirical work is now usually attributed to his ‘editor’ of 1569, the Bruges printer and publisher Hubert Goltz, and a curé of Bruges, Jean de Casteele and was extremely successful: up until its last print in 1714, it was printed no less then seventeen times.
