Weeze Doucette can’t stop her aunt’s deathbed argument from playing in her mind. “Her Aunt Ida had just disclosed to Weeze that she’d left two dolls to the newest family member, infant Isabella Fortier. Weeze begged to exchange the dolls named Jenny and Emily for other ones, insisting no one would know. “Ask me what my one last dying wish is, Weeze?” Ida Kidd had asked, while they fought. “What?” Weeze had asked. “To do what I won’t be here to…” Ida had replied, taking her last breath. Weeze had screamed, “You can’t do this to me!” and collapsed. Additional to the relentless flashbacks of Ida dying, Isabella, now a teenager, finds the card Ida left her with the dolls. She asks Weeze who Great Aunt Ida was for the first time. Weeze flees from Ridgefield, Connecticut to a friend’s vacant Manhattan apartment to avoid answering her niece. But after Isabella’s parents file to have Isabella emancipated (parents divorcing their child) and bad things start happening, Weeze is forced to solve the riddles left behind even if it means exhuming Aunt Ida from her grave.
