The long wail of the first air-raid warning of the night shrieked through the unlighted Chinese city and rebounded from the walls of the hospital courtyard. Dr. Sara Durand went quietly about her duties. Within five minutes all the hospital seemed to be moving down the ramps. Only the "sure-to-dies" were left behind in an air raid now. Ever since Dr. Gray Thomison, her superior, had gone back to America on vacation, leaving Sara in charge, the raids came nightly. But soon he would be back, she thought, her heart warming, and then life, even death, would be worth having, for they would be together again. That next morning, Sara received a cable: BRINGING MY WIFE WITH ME. WILL YOU FIX UP SOUTH BUNGALOW FOR US? SORRY TO GIVE SHORT NOTICE BUT THINGS WERE SUDDEN. LOUISE AND I SEND THANKS AND BEST WISHES.
