L'auteur à 17 ans lorsqu'il se confie à son Journal qui lui servira de fil conducteur pour rédiger Ma Vie. Cet ouvrage est une auto-analyse. L'existence du jeune Belge de " bonne famille " est alors scindée en deux : d'une part, le moi introspectif, angoissé, empreint d'un scepticisme morbide ; d'autre part, le je léger des jouisseurs et séducteurs de son âge. Symptôme schizophrénique, dont il parviendra à se défaire en affrontant au physique et au moral la terrible réalité des Tranchées de la Grande Guerre.
