Contemporary half leather, facing texts in Bulgarian and French. First edition of these spurious compositions, edited by Verkovič from the collections of the Bulgarian schoolteacher and folklorist Ivan Gologanov. A second volume appeared in 1881 at St Petersburg. Clearly post-Ossianic, the originator has never been certainly identified, but a recent survey (J. Bak, P.J. Geary & G. Klaniczay (eds.), Manufacturing a Past for the Present. Forgery and authenticity in medievalist texts and objects in nineteenth-century Europe. Leiden, 2015, p. xi) suggests that ‘in all likelihood’ the attribution to Gologanov himself, as their single-handed source, is correct.
