INTRODUCTION

A female cat will attract many males while in heat. Therefore she may mate with more than one male. This multiple mating can genetically vary each litter of kittens. Promiscuous breeding can result in different colored kittens in the same litter. Your female cat will have the uncontrollable urge to mate until she knows she has succeeded in pregnancy. This knowledge may take several hours after the fact in which your cat will continue to mate all available males. Keeping this in mind it is critical that you keep your female cat away from any male cats in which you do not intend it to breed until she is completely out of heat.

A cat’s breed is determined by physical characteristics and not patterns or coloring. The exact same patterns and coloring can be found in numerous breeds of cat. To understand the basic genetics of cat colors you must first understand the different colors and what role they may play in deciding what color your kittens will be.
