Books have been written that depict the horse, the dog or the cat in art as their subject, but the pigeon, the animal that is undoubtedly the most common in western art, has inexplicably not been discussed. surprised, because pigeons have played an important role in the lives of many people for a long time and still do. During my work on this book, it turned out that there were so many works of art with the pigeon as subject or secondary character that it had to suffice only describing the place of the pigeon in western painting. Dat er geen speciaal boek bestond over de rol van de duif in de kunst heeft mij hogelijk verbaasd, want duiven hebben sinds lang een belangrijke rol gespeeld in het leven van veel mensen en doen dat nog steeds. Tijdens mijn werkzaamheden aan dit boek bleken er zoveel kunstwerken te bestaan met de duif als onderwerp of bijfiguur, dat volstaan moest worden met het uitsluitend beschrijven van de plaats van de duif in de westerse schilderkunst. Ik heb niet naar volledigheid gestreefd, maar naar een globaal overzicht waarbij de duif door de tijd heen wordt gevolgd op zijn reis door de westerse schilderkunst"
