The Half-Way House

Jill was as disconcerted as anyone else would be when a complete stranger grabbed her arm (incidentally causing her to drop and break a bottle or milk) and called her an unspeakable little double-crosser. It was not long, though, before she realised that she was being punished for the outrageous bad manners or her sister Juliet. That led to her putting her own week-end plans aside in an effort to repair the damage that Juliet had caused . . . and then, all too naturally, to her falling in love with the man whom Juliet intended to marry. Jane Langford has a considerable talent for the creation of atmosphere and character, and in this novel her pleasant love-story is rounded out by her lively natural study of a family group, the individuals who compose it and the strangers who are drawn into its orbit.
