In de periode 1958-1960 fotografeert Magnum fotograaf Leonard Freed (1929-2006) in Nederland immigranten uit Indonesië. Deze Indische Nederlanders en Molukkers behoren tot de laatste grote golf die als gevolg van de dekolonisatie van Nederlands-Indië de bootreis naar Nederland aanvangt. Leonard Freed volgt hen van de boot naar de tijdelijke kampen, naar Nederlandse familie, op straat, op het werk en op school. De reeks van Freed is voor het eerst als geheel bijeengebracht in Indonesiërs in Holland. Leonard Freed woont van 1957 tot 1970 in Amsterdam. De foto's die hij in Nederland maakt zijn sociaalhistorische documenten die vertellen over de geschiedenis van Nederland, het koloniale verleden, oorlog, vrijheid, religie en politiek. Maar belangrijker is dat Freed met behulp van fotografie steeds een menselijke kant van het verhaal wil laten zien. De foto's leren je over jezelf en je verhouding tot de wereld.
