Feeding Frenzy

Organizational Deviance in the Texas Psychiatric Hospital Industry

by Henry Vandenburgh

98 pages· 1999· ISBN 9780761813385
About
Vandenburgh, who worked in the Texas mental health industry in the late 1980s and early 1990s--the period in question in this study-- and who now teaches sociology at State University of New York, bases his study on interviews and statistical data to explore the dimensions of the deviant behavior that occurred after Texas psychiatric hospitals were expected to meet high profit goals. He argues that due to these corporate fiscal expectations, hospitals became too obsessed with marketing, and lost sight of the needs of the patients.
