It studies his influence, both direct and indirect, on aspects of religious life, and particularly his hitherto neglected writings. Beginning with an examination of the roots of his religious thinking in the Protestant understanding of biblical monarchy, and his own experiences as king of Scotland, it moves to his reign in England, bringing together literary, religious and political history to consider such subjects as the poetic response to his accession, prophetic poetry at court, and the politics of conversion. Going beyond the usual critical attention to the short devotional lyric, the study draws on such forms as religious narrative, philosophical or theological verse, works of religious satire and controversy, liturgical verse and sermons, by both well and lesser-known writers.
