本书写作的思考开始于20世纪的80年代似懂非懂地来到华东师大接受硕士生教育在导师翟作君王爱玲邬正洪等导师的点拨下开始了对近代政治问题的思考考虑到近代社会变革的特殊性总想在政治经济文化几个方面都能得到锻炼于是进入新世纪后又来到浙江大学先后师从金普森田正平教授先后得到了在经济思想史和教育思想史方面的训练十几年下来终于品尝到跨学科研究的困难当然主要来自自身学术修养的浅薄当学术薪火传递到21世纪历史给予新生代更多的思维空间社会也赐予他们更优越的生存环境但推导不出他们会在学术上必然会超过先辈的结论虽然在逻辑上应该如此.
