Shootout on Hangman's Hill (A Time-Travel Story): Return to the Old West # 2

Mark Berger’s great, great, great grandfather from 1879 has stumbled through the time-portal and is now living in the modern-day world. Of course, one can hardly call Orville’s existence as living. Thinking the year is still 1879 and frightened of modern things such as cars and highways, he is confined to a mental institution.
Mark takes it upon himself to help Orville escape and get him back across the portal and to 1879. That can only be accomplished with deceit and trickery along with hours of planning. Dire situations call for dire actions and Mark is not above telling a few white lies and a lot of trickery. Neither will the plan work without Ray’s participation.

Excerpt from book:
“Oh, please, sweet Jesus, please don’t kill me,” Willie lamented, begging as he regained consciousness and saw Ray standing over him with his own gun. “Please sir, please don’t kill me. For the love of God please don’t kill me.”
“Don’t worry, Willie. You’re not going to meet your maker today. Not by my hands, anyway. However, I do suggest you call on Jesus sometimes in the future under less stressing circumstances. I’m just going to put an end to your career. I’m going to make sure you don’t hurt anyone else.”
That being said, Ray shot him in the left knee. His pants leg billowed out as the large caliber slug exploded that important joint.
Ray had intentions of immediately shooting him in the right knee. That would be impossible now without shooting him through the head. Willie screamed and sit up instantly, grasping the wounded leg. For a few seconds, Ray stepped back to watch him bellow like a wounded animal. Even Ray was startled by the audible results of his well-placed shot.
Not having time for Willie’s shenanigans, Ray brought the pistol back to place a blow across Willie’s forehead. A good blow might force him to lie back long enough to take the rest of his medicine.
Ray stopped at the last moment. He didn’t want to damage the gun before the lessons were over. Instead, he kicked Willie in the head with his boot. This encouraged Willie to go back far enough for Ray to administer the shot in his right knee. To both’s benefit, Willie fainted.
