About
An index to two records that were created during the Reconstruction in Georgia as a result of legislation passed by the United States Congress. The Returns of Qualified Voters and Registration Oath Books are significant records because they locate both white and black males in Georgia during 1867 and 1868, a period of significant change after the Civil War and before the enumeration of the 1870 U.S. Census. Since the white registrants alone number over 100,000, we limited this index to them with the expectation of indexing the black males next. The Georgia Department of Archives and History, custodian of 144 volumes of Returns of Qualified Voters and 271 volumes of Registration Oath Books, has microfilmed both series in order to preserve them and give the public easier access to the information in them.--From introduction, p. ix.
