Young Captain Code Schofield was the talk of the island, and the gossip was not good. His old schooner had dismasted and, leaking in a gale, had foundered near the Wolves, two sharp-toothed islands near Grande Mignon. Four islanders had been lost that day, and he alone had lived through the surf. It had been six months ago, and he had just begun to sleep nights without the nightmares.”
But Elsa Mallaby didn’t seem to mind the gossip though, as she flirted with Code with her great dark eyes. Perhaps she had underrated this briny youth who’d fought for his life in the sea after seeing others drown.
Elsa, the belle of the island, was persistent, however. Even when she married “Hard-Luck” Jim Mallaby she had always seemed to regard Code Schofield as the one man in Freekirk Head, but Jim, being too busy with his strange affairs, had not noticed.
The rest of the town certainly did. Right now, however, they were too busy talking about how the Michael Burns, the insurance inspector, had gone down with the schooner and Captain Code Schofield had collected a large insurance sum that enabled him to buy a new boat.

THE WILDERNESS TRAIL (1913)
A Hollywood film was based on this classic book set in the Northwoods of Canada, Donald MacTavish is appointed head commissioner of the Hudson's Bay Company and his rival Angus Fitzpatrick is furious. Angus sets out to get MacTavish fire but complicating matters further is that MacTavish and another man are both in love with Fitzpatrick's daughter and someone has decided to kidnap her.
