Englische Grabdenkmäler des Mittelalters 1250-1500

A plethora of sepulchral monuments in English churches and cathedrals from 1250 to 1500 have survived the march of history. Their diversity receives a comprehensive art-historical localization in this richly illustrated volume. Theoretical models relating to type, compositional schematics and architectural styles are developed and create better premises for the up-to-now unachievable dating of the monuments. While seeking through means of the tomb architecture to create an increasingly large "private" space for the sepulchral image within the church, the iconography of the architetectural elements permits the socio-political grouping of the interred to come to the fore and illuminates the self-understanding of prominent people of late medieval England. Iconographic and stylistic analysis of the sepulchral images support this approach and allow interpretative connections to the idea of death and the afterlife on the eve of the Renaissance. Eine Fülle von Grabdenkmälern aus der Zeit zwischen 1250 und 1500 hat in den Kirchen und Kathedralen Englands den Lauf der Geschichte überdauert. Ihre Vielfalt erfährt in diesem üppig bebilderten Band zum ersten Mal eine umfassende kunsthistorische Verortung. Entwicklungsstrukturen bezüglich der Typengeschichte, der Kompositionsschemata und des Architekturstils werden herausgearbeitet und schaffen bessere Voraussetzungen für die bislang oft unzulängliche Datierung. Neben dem Bestreben, mittels der Grabmalsarchitektur einen immer grösseren "privaten" Raum für das Grabbild innerhalb der Kirche zu schaffen, zeichnet sich eine Ikonographie der architektonischen Elemente ab, die sozial-politische Gruppen unter den Bestatteten hervortreten lässt und das Selbstverständnis der führenden Personen im spätmittelalterlichen England beleuchtet. Die ikonographische sowie stilistische Analyse der Grabbilder unterstützt diesen Interpretationsansatz und erlaubt Rückschlüsse auf die Vorstellung von Tod und Jenseits am Vorabend der Renaissance.
