Kim Roberts has just moved from Jamesville to Somerset, and she faces all the ordinary problems: getting used to a new school, living in a new home, and making new friends. But Kim can’t get used to one new thing in her life: She has AIDS, which she got from a blood transfusion.
Forced to leave Jamesville because of the horrible treatment she received from her schoolmates and neighbors, Kim vows not to let people in Somerset know about her illness. Then Kim begins counseling sessions at a place called Hope House. There she meets David, a young volunteer with leukemia, whose help and love give Kim the courage to enjoy life while she can.
But when David becomes dangerously ill, Kim wonders how long she can hold on to her newfound happiness.
