Emilio Vavarella

The work rs548049170_1_69869_TT, a translation of artist Emilio Vavarella's genetic code into a large textile, was produced by his mother on one of the first modern computational machines: the jacquard loom. From weaving and programming, through the inner workings of algorithms, software, and automated machines, up to issues of gender and labor and the complete computerization of human beings, the project recapitulates symbolically the historical trajectory of binary technology. This book highlights and extends the scope of this artistic undertaking through a series of visual documents and theoretical inquires by fifteen thinkers and practitioners from the fields of art, philosophy, bioengineering, media theory, and the history of science and technology.
