Gravure en clair-obscur

Cet ouvrage accompagne l'exposition éponyme présentée au musée du Louvre, Paris, du 18 octobre 2018 au 14 janvier 2019. L'estampe gravée sur bois en couleurs, appelée "chiaroscuro" en Italie, fut expérimentée vers 1508-1510 en Allemagne avant de se diffuser dans toute l'Europe, où elle gagna en sophistication jusque dans les années 1650. Fruit de recherches techniques et artistiques visant à traduire l'impression de riches nuances de teintes, la gravure en clair-obscur fascina les artistes, qui y explorèrent l'art des ombres et des lumières. La recherche de cette esthétique particulière fait de ce type d'estampe un objet au carrefour des autres pratiques artistiques : imitant le dessin sur papier teinté ou au lavis, le sgraffito de la peinture murale ou la mosaïque de pierre, elle est néanmoins un objet autonome, où la monochromie s'offre comme une autre voie pour représenter le monde. Bringing together in an unprecedented way nearly 120 prints preserved in the most important Parisian collections (Edmond de Rothschild collection, Louvre museum, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Custodia and Beaux-Arts Foundation of Paris), as well as emblematic loans from French museums ( Museum of Fine Arts Besançon) and foreign (British Museum, Ashmolean Museum and Rijksmuseum), the exhibition traces both a technique and a particular aesthetic of the print: the engraving in chiaroscuro, also called in color. It offers a chronological and geographical panorama through the masterpieces engraved by or after the greatest masters of the Renaissance and European Mannerism, such as Cranach, Raphael, Peter Paul Rubens, Parmigianino, Domenico Beccafumi or Hans Baldung Grien. The exhibition is based on a scientific research project, funded by the Patrima Foundation, which focuses on the analysis of pigments and dyes in about 40 chiaroscuro engravings and collaborates with the Louvre Museum, the BnF and the Center for Research and Restoration of the Museums of France (C2RMF).
