One of two copies in this collection of the first edition the best-selling Manuscrit venu de Sainte-Hélène d’une manière inconnue (1817), which purported to be Napoleon’s own personal and political testament. Instantly banned in France, and long suspected to be the work of Mme de Staël, it was confessed to years later by Frédéric Lullin de Châteauvieux–although a recent editor of Napoleon’s own marked-up copy (Paris, 1974; see Bib# 4102979/Fr# 1344 in this collection) disputes Lullin’s authorship.
