Da befolkningen i Oslo i 1625 ble tvunget til å flytte fra Bjørvika til Akershus for å bli Christiania-beboere, var beslutningen i følge Reinton strategisk tenkt på flere måter. Politisk betydde flyttingen at en vesentlig del av den norske historien ble lagt under torva for å legitimere dansk overhøyhet. I Oslo ble alle kirker revet, bøker ødelagt, alt som minnet om den norske storhetstida og dens forbindelse med Bysants ble gravd ned, kalkmalerier overmalt. Få steder i Europa ble historien så rasert og ødelagt som i Oslo i tida etter reformasjonen i 1537. Byen ble degradert fra hovedstad til provinsby etter at sentraladministrasjonen ble flyttet til København
