Alkohol und Eugenik

English version (from cover): The theatrically scandal of his social drama ›Before Sunrise‹ (1889) made the young author Gerhart Hauptmann instantly famous. The heraditary effects of alcohol as a central motif of the play expected too much from the contemporary audience. This study deals with several of Hauptmann's works, covering a long period from his theatrically debut until the 1941, when the Silesian poet published his ›Fairy Tale‹. The Investigation of the alcohol motif in Hauptmann's works and life turns out to be very informative for the development of his self-image as an artist, who temporarily was influenced by the temperance movement but soon feels himself as inspired ›medium‹. Especially he believes in creativity as an alcohol induced effect. Hauptmann's discussion of eugenics, personified by his friend Alfred Ploetz, becomes an issue of live long interest. As the eugenicists have always been alcohol opponents, the poet felt his artistic identity to be threatened. Consequently he eventually comes to a critique of eugenics, racial hygiene and NS-euthanasia, a critique which is not primarily founded by morality but in his self-image as a poet. Deutsche Fassung (Umschlagtext): Mit dem Skandal um die Uraufführung des sozialen Dramas ›Vor Sonnenaufgang‹ (1889) wird der junge Autor Gerhart Hauptmann schlagartig berühmt. Ein zentrales Motiv des Stücks überfordert das zeitgenössische Publikum: die erblichen Folgen des Alkoholkonsums. Die vorliegende Studie spannt einen weiten Bogen von den naturalistischen Anfängen des schlesischen Dichters bis zu seinem spätem ›Märchen‹ (1941). Die Untersuchung des Alkoholmotivs in seinem Werk und Leben erweist sich als aufschlußreich für die künstlerische Entwicklung Hauptmanns, der vorübergehend in den Bann der Abstinenzbewegung gerät, sich bald als inspiriertes ›Medium‹ zu begreifen beginnt und dem Alkohol kreativitätsfördernde Wirkung zuschreibt. Die Auseinandersetzung mit der Eugenik, personifiziert in seinem Freund Alfred Ploetz, wird zu einem Lebensthema. Da Hauptmann sich durch die Eugeniker, die immer auch Alkoholgegner waren, in seiner künstlerischen Identität bedroht sieht, kommt er schließlich zu einer Kritik von Eugenik, Rassenhygiene und NS-›Euthanasie‹, die nicht primär moralisch, sondern in seinem Selbstverständnis als Dichter begründet ist.
