Tom Burdick, a small town sheriff, investigates a mysterious vehicle fire that claims the life of a teenage boy. What follows is a series of seemingly connected fires that challenge his investigative skills as well as his sanity. Soon he discovers the source of the fires.
In 1984, NASA, in a joint venture with the military, makes a failed attempt to put a defensive weapon in orbit. The defunct satellite is jettisoned from its orbit into deep space. Twenty-nine years later, the satellite should be drifting along in the far reaches of our solar system. Instead, it has returned with a working weapon system and is parked directly above the Oklahoma town of Waters.
Whoever or whatever has control of the satellite is attempting to find its creator. Tom thinks he has found a link between the satellite and owner of the torched vehicle. Government agents are determined to keep discovery of the satellite confined to Tom’s jurisdiction. After the government’s attempt to communicate with the satellite fail, the inhabitants of Waters and the rest of Laine County are faced with unimaginable horrors that threaten not only their own existence but possibly that of the entire planet.
Along the way, a cast of local characters are drafted into Tom’s ad hoc posse, including his two deputies, his son, his girlfriend and her daughter, a firefighter, and a determined TV reporter that will stop at nothing to get the big story.
