About
A study not of the literary genre but of the Romance languages, focusing on reconstructing the path of grammaticalization of some analytic constructions and the competition between synthetic and analytic forms in the verb phrase. Pays particular attention to progressives, perfects, and some perfective periphrases such as the Catalan analytic perfective past. Claims that the interaction between aspect and actionality plays an important role in the process of grammaticalization, and that in the case of Romance progressives and perfects, it is the intrinsic actional value of the auxiliary that is retained in that process. Also identifies different degrees of actional retention in Romance analytic forms. Revised from a 1995 doctoral dissertation for Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. Double spaced.
