About
After a millennia of checkered existence, religion as we know it is finally running out of gas… thank god. Today, the number of people who affiliate themselves with a specific religious denomination is declining across the globe. Much like the ancient Incan’s, humans are beginning to realize that the simple answers provided by their religious beliefs no longer adequately address the more complex questions raised by our expanding knowledge of the universe. Concurrent with the decline in religious affiliation is the increasing numbers of people believing in a divine entity. Current research shows that while attachments to religious institutions are in decline, the numbers of people who believe there is someone or something at the cosmic controls is growing. These two trends can seem contradictory and confusing without context. But this divergence of beliefs simply reflects the gap between past religious thinking and the unfolding of the next theological paradigm as yet unformed and unclear. This post-theological paradigm, if you will, is the natural evolution of religion, the next step in the evolution of religious thought. In this book, I define the underlying tenets of this coming post-theological movement and in doing so hope to explain how it is possible to have a deep and genuine relationship with your god without having to bow to some dogmatic version of his or her (or its) will. My core tenets provide readers with a basis for understanding the post-theological perspective and the solace that there is an alternative to the ritualized and authoritarian dogma espoused by current world religions and atheistic fundamentalism; that there is no need to make the false choice between theism and anti-theism. In short, this book is for the non-theological and the theological; or as I like to put it, the pre-post-theological.
