The authors of “The Final Flight. Causes of the Smolensk Catastrophe. A Journalistic Investigation” reconstruct and analyze the final minutes of Tu-154M flight from Warsaw to Smolensk on April 10, 2010, which resulted in the tragic death of the Polish president, Lech Kaczynski, and 95 members of the accompanying delegation. The authors also attempt to provide an explanation of the circumstances which caused the catastrophe. They cite the accounts of the eyewitnesses to the presidential Tupolev’s departure from Warsaw, of the eyewitnesses to the catastrophe, and of the people who had knowledge what was happening at the Smolensk airport control tower at that time. The cooperation of Col. Robert Latkowski, the former commanding officer of the 36th Special Regiment of Aviation Transport (dedicated Air Force regiment providing air transport for members of Polish government), enabled the authors to persuade the Regiment’s pilots and engineers, who have never discussed these issues in public before, to reveal the details of deterioration over the last several years of the process of crew and technical personnel training. The material collected in the book allowed the authors to identify and conclude, with high degree of confidence that these decisions, mistakes, and long-term oversights are the underlying causes of the catastrophe.
