I’m in my early thirties and I’ve learned never to apologize for who I am. I grew up reading romances because I was desperate for strong role models I could aspire to, but it was to no avail. There was a time when every female protagonist was young, doe-eyed, and virginal; while every male inhabiting the books was virile, comically experienced, and an all-around rake whose soul needed saving.

I was as disinterested in those books as I was in action movies where bombshell women became puddles of desire at the feet of men who only wanted to rescue them and sow their wild oats (not always in that order).

The endemic representation of women in the media nowadays as crass, overly lewd, and sexually explicit is reductionist and offends my sensibilities.

I’m not looking to the rest of the world for role models anymore. I finally recognized the hero I had in my mother, who taught me how to sit and eat like a proper lady. She encouraged me to be as creatively expressive with my look as I want, but never vulgar, and always with keeping in mind my surroundings.

Women, she taught, are the forefront of social justice and morality. That, not pantyhose and cleavage, is what we bring to mankind.

That’s why I write stories about the extraordinary everywoman who stumbles into Mr. Right while conducting covert operations. My protagonists are willing to risk everything to do the right thing.
