Anna Louisa Walker

1836 – 1907

"Born in England, Anna Louisa Walker (1836-1907) came to Lower Canada as a child with her family. In 1858, after settling in Sarnia, Ontario, "Annie" and her two sisters opened a private school for young ladies which closed a few years later when Frances and Isabella died. She then joined the Paris household of her second cousin, the well-known Victorian writer, Margaret Oliphant, as a companion-housekeeper. In Canada, where she anonymously published her first book, LEAVES FROM THE BACKWOODS (1861), Annie is probably best known as the author of the hymn, "Work, for the Night is Coming." On her
