CURRENT RESEARCH PROJECT Name of Project: Food security through community food bank and employment generation: An action research in natural disaster prone areas in northern Bangladesh. Year: 2008–2011. Location: Roumari, Kurigram. Client: Department for International Development (DFID), British Council and Development Partnerships in Higher Education (DelPHE). Position: Project Coordinator (Lead Partner). Activities: Conducting collaborative research (with Hull University, England and Unnayan Uddog, a Bangladeshi NGO) on food security and community food bank to achieve the food security of the monga affected poor and ultra-poor people in the north-eastern region of Bangladesh by creating jobs in non-crop agriculture and agro-processing businesses and off-farm services (website: www.foodsecuritybd.com). COMPLETED APPLIED RESEARCH/PROJECT Name of Project: Underlying causes of deforestation and forest degradation in Mangrove forest (Sundarbans) of Bangladesh and its impact on environment. Year: 2007–2008. Location: Sundarban Mangrove Forest. Client: Global Forest Coalition (GFC), Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Position Held: Principal Investigator (EIA Specialist). Activities: Conducting research on underlying causes of deforestation of Mangrove forest and its impact on coastal environment and ecology. Planning, organizing and coordinating national workshops and seminars, and published papers and books. Name of Project: Impact of flooding on bank and bar (char) instability, human settlements, agricultural lands and natural vegetation in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna River. Year: 2006–2007. Location: Brahmaputra-Jamuna River, Bangladesh. Client: Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC), British Council and the University of Hull, England. Position Held: Research Fellow. Activities Performed: Conducted research on bank erosion and sedimentation, char-forming process and charland management. Framed policy guidelines showing effective ways in dealing with bank erosion and flood risk, and alleviating poverty through the development of potential uses of charlands while maintaining sustainability. Name of Project: Morphological estimation of sediment budget in the Brahmaputra-Jamuna River, Bangladesh. Year: 2005–2006. Location: Brahmaputra-Jamuna River. Client: British Royal Society and the University of Hull, England. Position Held: Visiting Fellow. Activities Performed: Conducted research on volumetric estimation of reach-scale sediment budgets using digital satellite image and cross-section survey data, and evaluated these approaches by field observation. This work provided access to high specification hardware, specialized GIS software and relevant expertise which are available in the University of Hull, England. Name of Project: Environmental impact assessment of land filling project in Ashulia area of Dhaka. Year: 2005–2006. Location: Ashulia and surrounding areas of Dhaka. Client: Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Jahangirnagar University. Position Held: Project Coordinator. Activities Performed: Conducted research on the likely consequences of land filling projects for the biogeophysical environment; and predicted main social and economic changes, and magnitude of impact on environmental quality. Name of Project: An experimental study of indigenous hydroponic cultivation for its development and spread in Bangladesh. Year: 2002–2004. Location: Savar, Dhaka and Nesarabad, Pirojpur. Client: Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology, GoB. Position Held: Co-Project Director. Activities Performed: Planning, designing and coordinating experimental research on indigenous hydroponic (Dhaap) cultivation in flood affected areas in Bangladesh. This work examined the environmental impact of indigenous technology transfer from one area to another flood affected area and highlighted the human-environment interaction from the indigenous people’s perspective. Name of Project: Braiding and channel morphodynamics of the Brahmaputra–Jamuna River, Bangladesh. Year: 1996–2000. Location: The Brahmaputra-Jamuna River and its char areas. Client: Department of Geography, The University of Hull, England. Position Held: PhD Fellow. Activities Performed: Conducted doctoral research on bank erosion, formation of chars, char morphology and char sediment properties and sediment budgeting, and published a book. This research also investigated the char elevation and inundation frequency, char permanency, land used patterns and human settlements, and finally sustainable management of charlands. Name of Project: New floodplain study, third fisheries project. Year: 1992. Location: Rangpur. Client: Department of Fisheries, Government of Bangladesh and World Bank; conducted by Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS). Position Held: Team Leader. Activities Performed: Planning, designing and supervising survey research as well as data analysis, interpretation and report writing on third fisheries project.
