Charles Henry Davis

self-educated American astronomer and rear admiral of the United States Navy. worked for the United States Coast Survey and researched tides and currents, commander of the Western Gunboat Flotilla in the U.S. Civil War, one of the founders of the National Academy of Sciences, author of several books.
